Biography
It’s been five years since the release of her first album “Mirrored Images” and eight years since her debut EP “What’s On Your Mind.” Today, Amanda Ray continues her innovative artistry in several projects that she has in the works.
Currently, Ray is back in the studio completing work on a concept album for a multimedia project entitled “Surraeon.” With a flair for the bold, cinematic, but yet sublime, Ray juxtaposes multiple facets of her creativity to craft, arguably, one her most imaginative albums to date.
With influences ranging from Cassandra Wilson and Björk to Sade and Massive Attack, Ray’s esoteric and ethereal stirrings are evident. After fifteen years in Atlanta, Georgia, and a short stint in London, the singer/songwriter/producer finds herself back in the city of her birth, New York—the point of origin in her musical journey.
While pursuing a Music Industry degree at Georgia State University, she began collaborating with like-minded local producers to help her create the sound that now defines her style. While still attending college, Ray embarked on a daring sojourn to London, where she spent six months immersed in the UK music scene.
After leaving the UK, Ray returned to Atlanta with a renewed sense of direction and began working with another local producer. These collaborations gave birth to her first EP project, “What’s On Your Mind,” which included a song that was played on NBC’s Today Show.
While learning her way around the recording studio, she gradually developed her own innovative means to express her true self. In 2004 she returned to New York City to complete some already pre-produced songs, as well as new ones, with Debbie Harry and Rufus Wainwright producers, Charlie Nieland and Barbara Morrison of Super Buddha Productions. This collaboration resulted in the more cinematic, “Mirrored Images.” This album attracted attention from an independent film studio. One of its strongest songs, appropriately named “Stronger,” was featured in the film, “Juncture.”
Ms. Ray’s signature sci-fi inspired wardrobe is her other unique expression. Born to a long line of women who designed their own wardrobe, she started sewing at the age of 5. A degree at Fashion Industries, helped her to sharpen her skill which later became very valuable. Through inspiration of her music, she creates a signature look with circuit boards and wires embedded into all of her clothing, giving her a sexy cyborg look. With ethereal music and a futuristic look, Ms. Ray satisfies your visual expectation.
Serving as co-producer on her first project, and producing her first and second album, Amanda Ray has created a truly unique sound that brings a mesmerizing experience. She has the rare ability to equally sound optimistic and melancholic. Ray’s current project promises to take her audience deeper into a universe of uncharted stars, galaxies and worlds. First destination: Surraeon!
